How do I use a peak flow meter?

  1. Stand up straight.

  2. Move the pointer to zero. Some electronic peak flow meters automatically return to zero.

  3. Hold the meter with your fingers out of the way of the pointer’s movement.

  4. Take in a deep breath.

  5. Seal your lips tightly around the mouthpiece (keep your tongue and teeth out of the way).

  6. Blast out a short, sharp blast. Do not cough into the meter.

  7. Do three tests each time. Record the best reading (highest number).

  8. Use first thing in the morning and before bed before taking your asthma medicine, unless your doctor gives you different directions.
