Family Food Allergy Education Program

for parents of children under 6 years with severe food allergies

Food allergies can have a huge impact on families' lives. The goal of the Family Food Allergy Education Program is to help families begin to find a balance between risks and safety measures so their child can lead a healthy life. This Program consists of 2 small group classes lead by an Allergy Nurse and held a week apart.

Week 1 Topics:

  • How to reduce the risk of having a reaction
  • Recognizing reactions
  • Responding to reactions
  • Hands on practice with the auto-injector
  • Learn about resources available to you

Week 2 Topics:

  • Recognizing and dealing with food allergy stress
  • How to communicate with others about the allergy
  • How to reduce risk in other environments
  • What to consider outside the home
  • (e.g. daycare, school, travel, restaurants)
  • How to begin teaching the child about their food allergy

Families are given an information booklet on food allergies.

The program is held at the Thompson Children's Allergy & Asthma Centre (across the street from the Children's Hospital Emergency Department) 685 William Avenue in Winnipeg, MB.
